[Boy Scout Requirements]  [Merit Badge Resources] [BSA Advancement Resources]

Boy Scout Requirements Book 2009Boy Scout requirements change from time to time and are detailed in the BOY SCOUT REQUIREMENTS book which is designed to bring together the requirements for merit badges, rank advancements, and Eagle Palms, and to highlight recognitions for special opportunities. The requirements for merit badges, ranks, and Eagle Palms published in that book are effective January 1, of the published year and remain effective through December of the published year. To see the latest requirements, check the current edition of the Boy Scout Requirements book (2009 edition is item # 33216 and is available from the Cumberland Scout Shop)

The 2009 Merit Badge updates are listed on the BSA National Council web site as well as on the unofficial web site www.meritbadge.org.
Merit Badge Counselors should check the
Counselor Guide page on the BSA National Council web site.

[Merit Badge Counselor Information, No. 34405]   [Worksheet for Building a Merit Badge Counselor List, No. 4439] [Merit Badge Counselor Instructor Guide]

BSA policy is that a Boy Scout may use requirements in effect when he started a Merit Badge or he may choose to use new requirements if they change while he is working on the badge.  THIS IS THE SCOUT'S CHOICE!  There is NO TIME LIMIT on completing the badge other than reaching age 18 (without a National waiver) unless the badge requirements state a specific time limit.  Accordingly, unit leaders and counselors should ensure the requirements books applicable to all years for their registered Scouts stays in the unit library until it is no longer needed for those Scouts working under "old" requirements.

From time to time, BSA updates Merit Badge pamphlets.  The pamphlets are printed and distributed when published.  If published BEFORE the requirements book is updated with any NEW requirements, BSA policy is that Scouts may choose to use the NEW requirements in the updated pamphlet or use the requirements in effect in the current requirements book.  Many pamphlets are being updated in 2007 and 2008, so leaders and counselors are advised to work CLOSELY with their Scouts in regards to which set of requirements are being used and what the Scout is expected to do for the badge.

Boy Scouts can invite friends using Web site e-mail for First Class Requirement!
The e-card, a new feature available to Scouts and leaders on the www.thescoutzone.org
Web site helps a Scout complete new First Class requirement to invite a friend to troop meeting or activity.  To use the e-card, a Scout goes to www.thescoutzone.org, clicks on “Tell a Friend,” enters his name and his friend’s name and e-mail address in the designated boxes.  He selects the action images he thinks his friend would be interested in doing, then chooses music and message. After previewing the e-card, he sends it to his friend.

Life to Eagle workshops

The Advancement Committee offers a one hour presentation to Life Scouts, their parents and unit leaders upon request of a troop.  The workshop explains the Eagle Scout application procedures and provides in-depth guidance on preparing and completing the Eagle Scout Service Project workbook.

2011 NEW Eagle Project Workbook procedures - Attention Scouts, Leaders, and Parents or Guardians Eagle Scout rank requirement 5 has been reworded. To support that change, a new Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook has been created. Through Dec. 31, 2011, Scouts have a choice to use either the new workbook or the one it is replacing. Scouts whose Eagle Scout service project has already been approved by the council or district under the former wording of requirement 5—and using the former workbook—should continue with the same workbook. If their project has not yet been approved by the council or district, they may elect to use the revised requirement 5 and the new workbook. Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Eagle Scout candidates—unless they have already submitted a plan for approval by the council or district under the former requirement—will be expected to fulfill the revised service project requirement 5 using the new workbook. National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Visit the official NESA Web site

The National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) is a fellowship of men who have achieved the Eagle Scout rank and who desire to use their efforts and influence toward forming the kind of young men America needs for leadership. The objective of NESA is "to serve Eagle Scout and, through them, the entire movement of Scouting."

The local Cumberland Lodge #5 of the Knights of Pythias recognizes Eagle recipients and may assist with Eagle projects.  Please visit their web site for contact information:  http://www.nckop.com.
